Statement of Ethics

Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Glenn Greenwald said: "Honestly disclosing rather than hiding one's subjective values makes for more honest and trustworthy journalism. But no journalism - from the most stylistically 'objective' to the most brazenly opinionated - has any real value unless it is grounded in facts, evidence, and verifiable data." As a journalist, that's a good credo to live by. It would be foolish for any of us to say we don't have biases. Most of us are privileged in some way or the other. What we can, however, do is face up to those biases. We can check our privilege, and do it constantly. As Culture Editor of FactorDaily, my job is to look at the intersection between technology and society and culture as they evolve in India. I personally believe that as much as technology is making strides in India, it is we who are evolving even more rapidly with technology. Telling stories from those intersections will be my job, and there couldn't be a more exciting time to tell these stories. And as we live in increasingly political and polarised times, it is important for all of us to be aware of our views and to not let them stand in the way of free and fair reportage. So in the spirit of "disclosing rather than hiding one's subjective values", I state that I am a secular liberal agnostic feminist. Those are my politics, and they do create a lens through which I see the world. However, being aware of these lenses gives me the ability to switch them off when I need to. As for any potential conflict of interest situations, I echo our founder-editor Pankaj Mishra: "My writings for FactorDaily have complete editorial independence, and neither existing and potential investors, nor existing and potential advertisers or partners, have any influence on what I write. Every time I write about companies where Accel or any of our investors have invested, I will make relevant disclosures. At FactorDaily, every time we write about the companies or people who have any direct connection with our investors, we will provide a direct link to the ethics statement and code of conduct. I do not own any stocks in the companies I write about, and if at all I do in future, relevant disclosures will be made."
