Signals That Shape Our Future

Become a Factordaily Fellow

During our many conversations on the ongoing crisis in journalism we always circle back to solutions that can help the journalists who care deeply about their work and its impact. With newsrooms fighting the eyeballs and views battle, deep reported stories that require weeks or sometimes months of research often don’t get the resources they deserve, leaving journalists frustrated. We’ve all been there. It’s not uncommon for the best and brightest minds in journalism to lay back and embrace this disappointment as a part of the profession or quit entirely to find fulfillment in other ancillary roles.

Globally, newsrooms have recognised the necessity of programs that help journalists, upskill, reskill or enroll in courses that help shape the future of journalism. At FactorDaily we want to offer fellowships to journalists who want to break from the daily or weekly treadmill of servicing a news story to produce their best work.

FactorDaily currently offers two kinds of fellowships:

FD Fellowship

Rs 1 lakh upfront grants for deep stories/ story project

Apply Now

FD Fellows-in-residence

Minimum of Rs 6 lakh in annual grants and support for each deep stories/story project

Apply Now

What are we looking for in a fellow?

Fellows must care deeply about a story project they pitch, be willing to helm it, come with one

or more solid reportable ideas in the project and deliver it.

Fellows can come from a journalistic or non journalistic background.

Fellows must believe in FD’s mission for good journalism and be willing to pay it forward to

the community.

Fellows must acknowledge that the work they produce at FD will be open for republishing by any other publication without a paywall.

Since all our work falls under the public interest umbrella, fellows can collaborate and partner with NGOs or research bodies working in the area ( for eg: orgs working in climate change, gender, mental health), work with them closely and credit them in stories.

Support for FD Fellows

Fellows will also receive support in terms of tools, learning and access while working on FD projects.

All our past and current fellows will be a part of the FD community where you shall receive community support for purposeful journalism, freelancing opportunities, other fellowship programs, journalism awards etc.

FactorDaily shall treat all its stories and projects as products. Fellows shall hold rights over the stories they have produced and will be involved if their work is being picked by a studio or a publishing house.

Here’s what our fellows have to say

author-monica
Monica Jha, Independent Journalist

The biggest appeal for me, both as a reporter and a reader, is the time that FactorDaily invests in reporting, resulting in stories great in-depth and rich in detail.

author-shamsheer
Shamsheer Yousaf, Independent Journalist

FactorDaily’s enthusiasm for good, old-fashioned shoe-leather reporting (a rarity among media publications these days) and its ambition in storytelling have drawn me to write for them over the years.

Mahesh
Mahesh Venkateswaran, Founder, LongevityHub

Factor Daily brings together professionals that like to dive deep into an issue and let the story emerge organically. The process has been refreshing and highly collaborative.

Somesh Kumar-comprs
Somesh Kumar, Designer-in-Residence, FactorDaily

As an editorial designer, I find FactorDaily’s deep dive into subjects at the intersections of society, culture and technology an exciting playground that keeps me forever engaged and curious.

Pavithra-comprs
Pavitra Jayaraman, Founder-Director, The PARC

Writing for FactorDaily’s mental health project and working with the editorial team allowed me to deep dive into the topic with deliberation without making any compromises on nuance or complexity for want of space or time.

My time as a Journalist Fellow here at Factordaily gave me precious time to think deeply about the challenges of local journalism in my country and about the future of journalism worldwide.
